Interview with Tri Ha

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas! In celebrating this holiday season, we will be featuring Tri Ha, a junior at Memorial High School, in our weekly blog. In this blog post, we will have a conversation with Tri on how COVID-19 has impacted the everyday life and education of a musician.
What instruments do you play, and how long have you played them?
I have played the piano as my primary instrument for 11 years and the violin for 6 years.
What are some of your musical accomplishments?
I have competed in numerous Texas piano competitions, such as the Steinway & Sons Piano Competition. I have performed numerous times at the Stude Concert Hall in Rice University. My biggest accomplishment is getting 2nd chair in piano at the TMEA All-State Convention.
With all of the workload from high school, how have you managed to fit music into your schedule?
I don’t believe that there is a burden to fit music into my schedule. I believe that if you are passionate about music, you should not let anything hold you back from practicing as much as you can. To me, music relieves my stress from school.
How has COVID-19 affected you in terms of music?
Quite frankly, COVID-19 helped expand my opportunities for music. With online school, I am able to practice more and get a lot more work done.
What do you love the most about music?
I love the fact that music can speak all languages. When you go anywhere, you can always communicate by music. It is sort of like a second language to me.
Finally, what piece of advice would you give to younger musicians?
Firstly, you should listen to your parents. Secondly, don’t let the small things, like time or money, determine whether or not you should become a musician. My final piece of advice is to perform as much as possible; you get to learn a lot about yourself, how you express yourself, and how to improve yourself from great feedback. Compete as much as you can because music schools like to see you engage in a lot of competitions/performances.
